We’ve decided from now on, we’ll be spreading more gyan* than usual. So here’s our first foray into giving more gyan to our shishyas**.

Today in Editing class, we were doing some exercises and we had to decide whether to use “whom” or “who” in a sentence. Unfortunately, in all these years of education, we were never completely sure how to differentiate between the two. But today we learned how. If you can replace a word with “he” or “she,” then it is the subject of the sentence and you should use “who.” If you can replace the word with “him” or “her,” it is the object and you should use “whom.” You might need to rephrase the sentence to make this work.

Example: The company needs to know [who, whom] it is insuring. (It is insuring him…so you would use whom.)
